A lot of People have problems with Jesus. Some have problems with his virgin birth. Others, struggle with his miracles. Others his healing. Others have problems with his divine claims or his proclamation that he was Lord of everything. Some people have problems with the resurrection. And others, struggle to understand that one day he will come back as the reigning king judging the living and the dead.
But almost no one has problems with Jesus in the manger.
Here, God becomes defenseless flesh and lies in a humble, dirty feeding trough. God’s meaning is clear: every barrier and defense has been broken down so that anyone can come and gaze upon the newborn king. Nothing is required and all are invited to come close. In this season, the Spirit uses this reality to draw people to himself. Those that are far off, skeptical and rebellious are invited once more to come and see the one who gave up everything for them. And for those of us who love him, it is a chance to adore him in a special way.
