“When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim, or by prophets. Then Saul said to his servants, ‘Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.’ ” 1 Samuel 28:5-7a ESV
Bad decisions seem to multiply on every side. The Philistine army that Saul fears includes David, who foolishly allied himself to the enemy of God and the enemy of his own people. And now Saul, still the leader of the Israelites, although rejected by God, encounters the silence of the LORD, whom he has disobeyed on so many occasions. In desperation, Saul searches out a medium and ends up going in disguise by night to En-dor, hoping to pierce the wall of death that separates him from the wise counsel of the beloved prophet, Samuel. What a sad way to spend his last night on earth. We cannot know when our end is near, but we can avoid dishonoring our God in our hearts and in our actions by turning to the deceptive lures that lead us into the snare of Satan.
