Why would all the men of Israel follow a worthless man and follow David? What made the men of Judah follow David steadfastly? The end of chapter 19 points out that the men of Israel felt like the men of Judah stole the King away from them. They held on to this offense and ended up following a worthless man. This division would ultimately linger until the kingdom is split in two under Solomon. Taking an offense and holding it leads to disunity and bitterness. We must learn to be quick to forgive and let things go. The prayer of Jesus in John 17 for unity should be our prayer too.
Today’s Chapter: 2 Samuel 20
“Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said, ‘We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!’ So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.” 2 Samuel 20:1
